Arriving at Conference:
Directions

By plane: San Francisco International and Oakland International Airport are each within easy access to the University of California at Berkeley and the housing sites for the conference.

From the airport: Best to take a BayPorter Shuttle ($25) which will take you directly to the hotel/dorm. You can reserve or just take the shuttle when you arrive. Taxis are available but expensive. You can also take Bart, the local subway system from SFO . This is the least expensive way to cross the Bay but will take somewhat longer.

If you are driving either from the airport or directly to the conference, you will want to take 80 and exit at University Avenue, then go straight up University to Oxford where it ends. You will need to locate a parking facility off campus. See Parking below.

Conference Location:

Most of the events will take place at the Faculty Club on the University of California campus. This facility is an easy (less than 5 minute walk) from either the hotel or the dorm. http://berkeley.edu/map/ Look for the registration desk close in by the front door of the Faculty Club to get your registration packets (which contain the program and other information) if you have pre registered. This desk will be open starting at 8 AM on Friday, July 10. If you have not yet registered, you can still register at this desk. We only accept cash or check at the conference.

Everyday, several panels will convene at the Center for Child and Youth Policy at Berkeley, one of our generous conference sponsors. The center is not on the University of California campus, but at 2339 Haste Street, Second Floor, a 10 minute walk from the Faculty Club, the Durant Hotel, and from the dorms. You should proceed West on Bancroft, Durant, or Channing (toward the Bay), turn left on Dana, up to Haste. Then turn left and go one-half block. The facility is clearly marked. One of our graduate student assistants, Shahla Helalian, will be there to help you once you get there.

This facility also houses Berkeley's latest and most up-to-date child care facility. Everyone should come and take a look at what child care means today.

Parking: The city of Berkeley is not an easy place to park a car, and the campus is worse. But on the weekend there may be places to park on the campus , both on the street and in university lots where you can pay by the hour.

Important Information for those staying in the Dorms
Known as Unit 1

Unit 1 Front Desk

The Unit 1 Front Desk is located below the central plaza (entrance at Durant next to the Durant Hotel) and is open daily from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm. The telephone number is (510) 642-3141 and should be used to relay messages and for after hours check-ins and assistance. The Unit 1 Front Desk staff can assist you with lost keys, lockouts, transportation schedules, maps, directions, and advice on local attractions.

Check-In

Our Conference Clerk staff are students who live on site and will check in each guest. In addition, they will distribute room keys, meal cards and a welcome letter giving guests information about the site. For late night check-ins or after-hours assistance, please call the front desk telephone number, (510) 642-3141, and your call will be forwarded to the Conference Clerk on duty. The telephone number is posted outside of each residence hall building.

Check-Out

Please advise guests to close their room doors (doors lock automatically) and return their keys to the Front Desk by 12:00 noon or the check-out time they have indicated. Lost keys and keys not returned upon check-out are subject to a replacement fee; $50.00 for regular rooms and $75.00 for suites. Keys that are not returned will be billed to your program on the master bill. Since the lock is changed shortly after a key is reported missing, the fee is not refundable if the original key is returned at a later date.

Other Bay Area Sites and Opportunities:

The Bay Area is full of beautiful and special sites and events. The registration packet will contain information about the special Tutankhamen exhibit at the De Young Museum. But San Francisco also has an excellent Museum of Modern Art and a unique collection at the Asian Art Museum. Berkeley itself has an art museum, a famous archeology museum, and other attractions. The Bay Area is also full of musical events and concerts of all kinds during the summer. Some of these take place at Zellerbach Auditorium on the Berkeley campus, or at Louise Davies Hall in San Francisco.

The best way to reach San Francisco and its sites and many excellent restaurants is by BART. http://www.bart.gov/ Departing from the Downtown Berkeley Station at Shattuck and Center Streets.

Berkeley is only one and one-half hours from the Napa and Sonoma Valleys (the heart of the California Wine Country), from Muir Woods (in Marin County) and from Point Reyes, the furthest point out in the Pacific on the entire West Coast, and full of largely unpopulated (and sometimes) cold beaches. A bit further are both the Carmel area, the Santa Cruz beach area, and Yosemite National Park. These are accessible only by car.
